Welcome to East Middle School

What's Happening

Friday, August 7, 2020

Dear East Middle School Students, Parents and Staff,

Welcome to the 2020-21 School Year!  This is certainly a unique, quickly changing, and challenging time for all of us.  At East, one that will not be changing, we will remain committed to fulfilling our vision of encouraging growth, exploring passions and sparking curiosity.

To start this school year, our students will be part of cohorts in each grade.  Using the guidelines presented by the Colorado Department of Education and District 51, students will spend the majority of their day with a common group of students and travel through the majority of their schedule together.  Cohorting students is important because if a student were to contract Covid, we want to be able to  minimize the number of people who must be quarantined and minimize the potential sickness of EMS’s community.

Our schedule will be different, with our community’s health and wellness taking the lead.  Each day, students will have two core courses and one exploratory course, with Fridays rotating every other week.  This is commonly known as an A/B Schedule.  This will limit student transitions and allow us longer periods of time with students to go deeper with learning.  Our goal is to have more cross-content, applied and unified learning experiences in cohorts and fewer tasks each day.  Our electives and exploratory classes will be organized similarly, still providing most options that students have had in the past.  A bigger change is that 6th grade students will not be required to take a full year of music and they will be allowed to take a full year of physical education.

Here is an overview of our master schedule:

Most Frequently Asked Questions by Students and Parents this Week:

Q:  How do I make sure my student is registered for school, which is currently slated to start on August 17, 2020, for face-to-face instruction?

A:  All registration for D51 students is occurring online at ParentVue and StudentVue.  Please do your best to make that happen as soon as possible. All fees can be paid through My Payments Plus https://www.mypaymentsplus.com/welcome Thanks!

Q:  How long will each core content class be?

A:  Each of the two core classes a student will have on any given day will be about two hours and twenty-six minutes.  During this time, in addition to content instruction, we will have outside mask breaks, guided student hygiene practice, and social and emotional learning opportunities.

Q:  Will this schedule be for the whole year?

A:  At this time, we are not sure. Many aspects of this schedule are actually quite beneficial, and fortunately, this schedule allows us to easily transfer to and from remote learning as we may need.

Q:  What are the benefits of our schedule?

A:  The health and welfare benefits for our community are first and foremost.  Additionally, students get a significant amount of time with a teacher to learn about content in depth, and students will have fewer courses to keep track of in one day.  We can spend more time on teaching and learning, and less time navigating the rules for moving around the building and sanitizing their workspace.

Q:  What will music classes look like?

A:  Most music classes will still exist, however given current restrictions they will look different.  We are brainstorming ideas for minimizing the gaps between instruction, especially for more advanced music classes. Sixth grade students will not be required to take a full year of music.

Q:  How will before and after school look?

A:  Our start, 7:52 AM, and stop, 3:07 PM, will remain the same.  We ask that students do not arrive before 7:30 AM to help ensure their safety and supervision.  As students arrive, they will be guided to areas on our campus with their cohorts, or to the cafeteria if they are eating.  Breakfast will be served.  Students or their parents need to complete the online Student Symptom Tracker before students enter the building.  We will work with students to ensure this has been completed in order to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.  Students will need to leave the campus, including the park, by 3:15 PM and staff will leave by 3:45 PM to allow for full cleaning of our school and grounds.  After school programming may create minor adjustments in after school hours.

Q:  How will lunch and recess look?

A:  Our lunch and recess have been extended to forty-five minutes to provide more outdoor time and excellent handwashing opportunities.  Students will eat inside and outside this year!  They will eat with their cohorts and play in the park within safe distances of other students who are not in their cohorts.

Q:  What about lockers?

A:  Students will not have lockers this year.  They will carry cinch sacks or backpacks with their learning supplies, lunch and other personal items.  Time will be spent in class helping students with organization skills and executive functioning skills, which should translate into more work completion, more learning, safer hygiene conditions and less time off-task in the hallways.

Q:  Will there be athletics and after school programs?

A:  At the present time, there are no middle school athletic programs which have been approved.  After school programs will continue in a safe manner.
